How to Make Affiliate Links Search Engine Friendly

Anyone who runs an affiliate program through any of the major affiliate providers is bound to wonder if they are missing out on some really good Page Rank due to the SEO-unfriendly affiliate links pointed at them from their affiliates (me included). I keep reading about the use of a 301 redirect combined with mod-rewrite or some other filtering mechanism and cookies as a way to pass the backlink strength to the merchant site.

Take a look at one of the discussions here.

Problem is, I see a lot of discussion, but has anyone actually made this work?

  1. Well, aside from ditching Commission Junction altogether, it appears backlinks are not among the benefits CJ is willing to share.

But, I’m curious to know if by some miracle, I could convice CJ to add my own “tracking” image to affiliate code pointing back to a site. This “tracking” code would include a transparent image sitting on my domain. This would provide a spiderable connection to my domain. Granted, it would point to an image, but I’m curious to know if it would pull in any backlink strength for the domain as a whole.

    Something like:
